Self-Care for the Soul with Mala and Me

This year, I’ve decided to dedicate the entire month of March to self-care on my blog. Each week, I’ll be talking all about how you can take better care of your mind, body, and soul.

This week, I’ll be focussing on self-care ideas for the soul with help from Mala and Me! Mala and Me is a local Edmonton-based gemstone company specializing in the creation of Malas and other vibrational jewellery. All Mala and Me jewelry is rooted in beauty and creating a spiritual practice.

If you’re unsure of what a Mala is, they are generally known as pieces of jewelry used for keeping count while reciting prayers, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra or affirmation. Most Malas are typically made with 21, 24, 27, 54 or 108 beads, and each bead represents one repetition of your mantra.

I recently got to check out the Sweet Soul Mala and Matte Howlite Bracelet from Mala and Me and was floored by how beautiful both of the pieces were!

The Sweet Soul Mala is known to help wearers draw in more love, of any kind. Rose Quartz is known as the stone of unconditional love. It strengthens your sense of beauty and opens your heart for inner peace, positive self-love, and self-esteem.

The Matte Howlite Bracelet is known to help wearers heighten creativity and expand self-expression. Howlite, also known as white marble, is a wonderful stone for calming states of mind and emotion. It helps to decrease an overly critical state of mind, selfishness, stress, and anxiety to bring calm and relaxation to the wearer. Its specific energy aids in communication and eases confrontations.

To be honest, I have never thought of myself as a “spiritual” person. I don’t wake up every morning and meditate, talk to my crystals, or do yoga – but I do believe that setting an intention or mantra for yourself every single day is extremely beneficial for your soul. That’s why I love the idea of a Mala.

If you are someone that wants to start utilizing prayers, affirmations, or meditations as a means to help solidify a positive outlook and to embolden the law of attraction in your life, I highly recommend investing in a Mala and using it as a daily self-care tool for your soul.

A huge thank you goes out to Mala and Me for partnering with me this month to promote self-care for the soul through daily mindfulness and mantra! If you’d like to check out more products from Essentials by Nature, click here to visit their website.

I encourage you to join me in practicing self-care at least once a week during the month of March. To help document your weekly self-care and inspire others to do the same, I’ve created an Instagram Story template that you can use, which can be found in the @paigesimpsonyeg story highlights!

Self-Care for the Body with Essentials By Nature

This year, I’ve decided to dedicate the entire month of March to self-care on my blog. Each week, I’ll be talking all about how you can take better care of your mind, body, and soul.

This week, I’ll be focussing on self-care for the body with help from Essentials By Nature! For those who don’t know, Essentials By Nature is a local Edmonton skin & body care brand that believes in promoting wellness through the power of nature. All of their products are made from natural essential oils and other plant-based, all-natural ingredients and are free of chemicals, parabens, dyes, synthetic fragrances, sulphates, and formaldehyde. AMAZING, I know.

I recently got to try out three different Essentials By Nature products and have been using them religiously ever since. So, I thought I’d share a bit about how I incorporate these products into my own self-care routine!

I’m the type of person that takes on WAY too many things, and this can often leave my body feeling incredibly tense and stressed. This essential oil blend of lavender, sweet orange, bergamot, and cedar wood is the perfect way to soothe my body after a stressful day. Usually, when I’m getting ready for bed, I’ll roll a bit of the Calm Roll On on my temples, back of my neck, and my wrists. The scents help me to relax, stay calm, and drift off to sleep.

I struggle with anxiety, and it has always been heightened at bedtime. Before bed, I’ll spray the Calm Body & Air Mist in my room to aid in relieving any anxiety that I may be feeling. This mist is also a great product to bring to the gym! I often spray some on myself post-workout to help my body relax and unwind.

If you live in Edmonton, you understand how dry our skin gets in the winter. For me, hand cream is a necessity during the winter months, but it’s often difficult to find an all-natural cream that does the job. That’s why I was blown away by how well this hand Cream worked for my dry skin! I usually apply a small amount on my hands, knees, and elbows before bed and always wake up to more nourished, softer skin in the morning!

A huge thank you goes out to Essentials by Nature for partnering with me this month to promote self-care through all-natural, locally-made products! If you’d like to check out more products from Essentials by Nature, click here to visit their website!

My Personalized Facial Experience at Kaya Kama Hammam & Day Spa

If you have been watching my Instagram stories lately, you know that the past couple of weeks have been difficult. While coping with the sickness of a dear friend, I received devastating news about medical complications of a family member. This, on top of the regular work I had to complete for the week, left me extremely emotionally tired and drained.

As many of you know, it's difficult to take care of yourself when you are focussed on your loved ones. Personally, I find it tough to cater to my own needs and nourish my own body in times like these. But last week, I was lucky enough to be pampered by the lovely Carolina at Kaya Kama Hammam & Day Spa with a personalized facial! This was my first facial ever, and after the experience I had at Kaya Kama, it definitely won't be my last.

Before the facial even began, I sat down with Carolina (the sweetest aesthetician ever) for an in-depth consultation about my skin. We talked about my skin's problem areas with sensitivity, acne, and dry patches. We also discussed the products that I was currently using in my skincare routine, as well as the amount of water I drink on a daily basis (Guilty as charged—I definitely don't drink enough).

After my skin consultation, Carolina stepped out of the room to gather products specifically catered to my skin. Since I have extremely sensitive skin, she made sure to chose all-natural Eminence Organic products that would soothe my skin and cause me the least amount of irritation and redness. While Carolina was gathering the products, I had time to slip into the towel gown that they had provided for me, and started to relax. The facial room at Kaya Kama was decorated with dimly lit tea light candles, and playing in the background was soft relaxing music. To be honest, this moment at Kaya Kama was the first time in a long time that I was able to clear my mind of all of life's stressors, and simply enjoy a bit of relaxation and pampering.

The personalized facial process at Kaya Kama includes cleansing, exfoliation, hot towel press, steaming, extraction (when necessary), facial massage, and a mask catered to your skin type. During my personalized facial, Carolina walked me through the entire process by letting me know which products were being applied and by asking me how each product felt on my skin. This allowed me to stay in control of my appointment, while still allowing me to relax and unwind.

Each product that was used on my skin smelled delightful, and after each product was applied, I could feel my skin become more refreshed. Not to mention, in between each step, a hot towel press was applied to my face which was LITERAL heaven. Honestly, I was so relaxed during my facial that I probably could have fallen asleep (good thing I don't snore, hey?).

After my facial was complete, Carolina left out all of the products she used during our session for me to look at, along with the sweetest hand-written note. I left my appointment feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. It was almost as if I'd just stepped out of a meditation class or something — I know it sounds weird, but it's true! Who knew that you could leave a facial feeling that renewed and rebalanced?

If you live in the Edmonton area and are considering any kind of spa or medi-spa treatment, I would highly recommend visiting Riti and her team at Kaya Kama Hammam & Day Spa. They offer facials, laser hair removal (with Diode Laser YAG technology), massages, waxing, tinting, threading, and even manicures and pedicures! To learn more or to book an appointment, you can contact Kaya Kama at 780-988-5554, or visit them online at

Laser Hair Removal: What To Expect

Close your eyes and imagine a world where you didn't have to shave or wax anymore. Think about having silky smooth legs, armpits, and lady parts for the rest of your days. Think about all of the time you would save by not having to shave in the shower, or the money you would save by skipping your monthly waxing session at a salon or spa.

I know what you're thinking: "that sounds amazing"! and you're in luck, because all of those dreams can become a reality. That's right; I'm talking about Laser Hair Removal!

Laser hair removal can seem scary, especially when you have no clue what to expect. I recently went to Lipstick Empire Laser Spa in Edmonton for my first laser hair removal treatment and thought I would share my experience with you!

I decided to get a Brazilian, which sounded super awkward to me at first, considering someone is all up in your female parts. But I decided to just do it (as Nike would say) and booked a consultation. No longer would my lady parts have to suffer from cactus-like conditions! No longer did I want to have to deal with copious amounts of ingrown hairs or itchy stubble!

So, let's get real here for a second — laser hair removal costs a pretty penny depending on what area of your body you get done. So, if you're thinking of going for treatments, keep that in mind and do your research. A Brazillian treatment at Lipstick Empire costs $200 per treatment (Click here for Lipstick empire's full pricing guide), and it usually takes up 5-8 treatments to see major results. Luckily for me, Lipstick Empire had (and most likely still has) a great promotion going on where if you pay for 5 laser hair removal treatments, you get 2 treatments free!

In the rest of this blog post, I will be highlighting my experience with laser hair removal at Lipstick Empire, as well as letting you guys know what to expect before, during, and after your laser hair removal treatment.

Before Your Appointment

Before your laser hair removal appointment, there are a few things you should know. Most places offer free consultations before your appointment, and they will tell you all of this there, but if you want to be prepared beforehand, here are some ways you can do that:

  1. Do not pluck or wax 3 weeks before your appointment. Your hair follicle needs to be in place and in its growth period when you get laser hair removal, so you don't want to pull it out by plucking or waxing. A normal growth period for hair is approximately 3 weeks, so make sure you stick to shaving instead of plucking or waxing at least 3 weeks before your appointment on the area that you are treating.
  2. Shave the night before. Shave every part of you that will be treated during the laser hair removal process. If you don't shave, you will be smelling burnt hair, and that's never a good smell.
  3. Avoid the sun at least 4 weeks before your appointment. Recently tanned skin cannot be treated (either by natural sunlight or tanning beds). You should also discontinue using any self-tanning products at least a week prior to treatment.

At Lipstick Empire, my consultation and treatment were booked for the same day. In this case, I had to do some research on my own before my first appointment. I started by looking up articles and youtube videos of people who had recently had the Brazilian laser hair removal treatment done, and actually learned a lot from those videos. I would suggest doing some of your own research before your appointment so that you feel as prepared as possible, and so that your consultation or treatment takes less time.

During Your Appointment (The Process)

Depending on what part of your body you are treating, the laser hair removal treatment may seem pretty awkward at first. If you're getting a Brazilian...don't worry. The aesthetician performing your treatment has probably seen so many lady parts in their lifetime that they won't even notice yours. All they will be worried about is what spots of skin they still have to laser. Although it may be a little awkward the first treatment, by your 4th treatment, it will be like visiting an old friend.

Your first laser hair removal appointment will most likely go something like this:

  1. The Laser Spa will get you to sign a consent form. This form will also ask a series of question to figure out your skin type. This allows your aesthetician to know which laser, and laser settings, to use on your specific skin type.
  2. Your Aesthetician will take you back to a room and answer any last questions you may have about the treatment before they start. This room will most likely have a crazy looking laser hair removal machine (as pictured to the right), chilling in the corner. Even though it kind of looks like something from a sci-fi movie, don't be worried.
  3. Next, your aesthetician will ask you to reveal the specific area. If it is a more sensitive or private area like the pubic area, they will get you to cover up with a smock while they leave the room.
  4. They will provide you with special (and obviously super cool looking) protective eyewear that will protect your eyes from the laser's light. If the laser hair removal place you go to does not provide you with protective eyewear — RUN.
  5. Your Aesthetician will usually do a test patch on your skin before they start the full treatment to see how your skin reacts to the laser.
  6. Once they start the full treatment, the process itself feels like a hot rubber band being snapping on your skin. To me, the pain was a 6/10, but that really depends on your own personal pain tolerance as well as what part of your body you are getting treated. At Lipstick Empire, they use a cryogen cooling device that shoots cold air on the area directly after being treated. This prevents the area from burning or scarring and also just feels really nice for the patient.

My aesthetician at Lipstick Empire was Natasha (@media.aesthetician_natasha on Instagram). She was extremely professional, explained everything I needed to know about the process, and answered all of the questions that I had with ease. Although I was getting laser hair removal treatment on a pretty private area, she made me feel so comfortable throughout the entire appointment.

After Your Appointment

After your appointment, your treated skin may feel like you just got a sunburn. After my appointment, my skin felt fine. Although, it's still important to be cautious and gentle with your just-treated skin. Some other things you should know after your appointment:

  1. Do not wax or pluck your hair in between treatments. Like I said above, our hair follicle needs to be in place and in its growth period when you get laser hair removal, so you don't want to pull it out by plucking or waxing. You can shave though!
  2. Avoid direct sunlight on the area, or use sunblock at all times. In my case, my lady parts rarely see the sun in winter, so I don't have to worry. But, if you are going on vacation or live in a sunny place, be sure to cover up or slather on the sunblock.
  3. As your hair grows back, you might notice some bald patches already. Also, there may be some hair that falls out as it grows back. After my first treatment, I noticed some small patches of hair that didn't grow back, but nothing too crazy. Remember that the process itself usually takes 5 to 8 treatments to see major results.

I hope this blog post helped you, at least a little bit, in terms of knowing what to expect when it comes to laser hair removal. If you live in the Edmonton area and are thinking of getting laser hair removal done, I would highly suggest Lipstick Empire Laser Spa. Also, feel free to contact me with any more questions you may have regarding laser hair removal or my experience with Lipstick Empire.
